Mazzanchut Fm

Period:
Proterozoic

Age Interval:
Ediacaran (Rf? mz), R1

Province:
SE Tajik (SE Pamir)

Type Locality and Naming

It was distinguished in 1949 by B. P. Barhatov, who considered it conditionally Lower Paleozoic.

Synonym: Mazzanchut suite, Маэанчутская свита

Reference section:

Lithology and Thickness

The primary rocks of this suite were likely mainly volcano-clastic; later, they underwent greenstone metamorphosis. The suite is composed of green albite-biotite-actinolite schists, including layers and lenses of white marbles, marbled limestones, mica schists, and amphibolites. The incomplete thickness of the suite is 500 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Volcanic_ash

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Upper contact

Carboniferous (?) - Triassic and Jurassic rocks

Regional extent

It is widespread in the Rushan range.

Age

B. P. Barhatov, who considered it conditionally Lower Paleozoic. After establishing in 1964-1967 by V. I. Dranov in the Southeastern Pamir conditionally Riphean green schist-metamorphosed sedimentary-volcanic strata underlying the Carboniferous (?) - Triassic and Jurassic rocks (see the description of the Alichur Gr) in the section, he suggested that the Mazzanchut Fm is most likely Riphean. However, until recently, the Mazzanchut Fm was considered part of the conformable section of the Rushan complex, the age of which was initially considered Early Paleozoic (Barhatov, 1949), and then Carboniferous-Permian (Dranov, 1930) and Carboniferous-Triassic (Barhatov, 1963; Kushlin, 1964). Questions about the primary origin of the Mazzanchut Fm, its position in the section, and its age require further research.
